In Texas, authorities are learning more about the man who opened fire at a church on Sunday, killing 26 people and injuring 20 others. Devin Patrick Kelley had a history of domestic violence, and new documents show that he also escaped a mental health facility in 2012 after police say he threatened to kill his superiors in the Air Force. This news is not much solace for the people of Sutherland Springs, a town where people used to feel safe in their rural remoteness, as NPR's Nathan Rott reports. NATHAN ROTT, BYLINE: Shirlee Filoteo is one of the 400 or so residents of Sutherland Springs. She's been here for about eight years and loves how close-knit the community is.
